What anti-skid surfacing is, and why it works

Anti-skid surfacing, also called high friction surfacing (HFS) or anti-slip coating, is a tough resin binder topped with hard, sharp aggregate, usually calcined bauxite. It gives tyres and shoes far more to hold on to than worn tarmac or polished concrete.

That extra grip shortens braking distances and cuts slips exactly where people and vehicles need to stop or turn: approaches to junctions, roundabouts and pedestrian crossings, tight bends, steep ramps, bus stops, loading bays, footbridges and steps. Coloured aggregate lets the same surface mark out bus lanes, cycle lanes and pedestrian zones at the same time.

Every Grip Tekk job starts with a free site survey. We check the existing surface, measure the area and tell you plainly what it needs and what it will cost.

How we lay anti-skid surfacing

Most sites are prepared, surfaced and reopened within a single shift, including nights and weekends.

Book your survey
  1. Free site survey

We visit, measure, check the existing surface and the skid risk, and agree timing and access with you. You get a fixed written quote.

  2. Traffic management and preparation

We set out Chapter 8 traffic management, then sweep, remove loose material and treat, patch or shot-blast the surface so the resin bonds properly.

  3. Resin binder laid

A measured coat of resin binder goes down by hand or machine to the exact area, with clean edges at kerbs, ironwork and road markings.

  4. Aggregate broadcast

Calcined bauxite or a coloured aggregate is spread over the wet resin until it's fully covered, then left to cure.

  5. Sweep, check and reopen

Once cured, surplus stone is swept up, the finish is inspected and the area is handed back, usually within hours.

How long does anti-slip coating last?

Life depends on what goes over it. Feet are gentle, braking HGVs are not. Here's what to expect on a sound, well-prepared surface.

Ask about your site
Walkways, steps and footbridges8–12 yrs
Car park ramps and decks6–10 yrs
Roads, junctions and crossings5–10 yrs
Loading bays and HGV yards5–8 yrs

Typical service life only. Actual life depends on traffic volume, turning and braking forces, the condition of the surface underneath and the weather.

Anti-skid surfacing questions, answered

What is anti-skid surfacing?

Anti-skid surfacing, also called high friction surfacing (HFS), is a resin binder topped with a hard, sharp aggregate such as calcined bauxite. It gives tyres and footwear much more grip than worn tarmac or polished concrete, which shortens stopping distances and reduces slips.

How long does anti-skid surfacing last?

On a sound, well-prepared surface it typically lasts 5 to 10 years. Heavy braking and turning traffic wears it faster; car parks and walkways usually last longer. We'll give you a realistic expectation for your site at survey.

How soon can the area reopen?

Most cold-applied systems cure within a few hours, depending on temperature. The majority of our jobs are laid, swept and reopened within one shift.

Can it go over existing tarmac or concrete?

Yes, as long as the existing surface is sound. We check it during the free site survey and treat, patch or shot-blast it first where needed so the resin bonds properly.

What's the difference between anti-skid and anti-slip coating?

They use the same principle. "Anti-skid" or "high friction" usually describes surfaces for vehicles, where the aggregate is chosen for skid resistance under braking. "Anti-slip" usually describes pedestrian areas such as walkways, steps and ramps, where a finer aggregate can be used.

How much does anti-skid surfacing cost?

Price depends on the area, colour, condition of the existing surface, access and traffic management. We give you a fixed written price after a free site survey, so there are no surprises.

Do you provide traffic management?

Yes. We plan and set out Chapter 8 traffic management and can work nights and weekends to keep disruption to a minimum.
